Our Surroundings
We love this authentic and lively district, the “Saint Martin Canal village”, including numerous hewn stone buildings dating from the Haussmann period and small, trendy restaurants that are often packed in the evening.
To the east: our quiet, pleasant street, emerging onto the Saint Martin Canal, which was established 200 years ago by order of King Charles X. Traffic is prohibited on its banks on Sundays; crowds of picnickers come to this agreeable, airy place on summer evenings. The canal’s bridges, locks and sidewalk cafés complete this enchanting picture of a perfect Parisian evening.
To the north: just above the hotel, a beautiful, flower-filled park – Square Villemin – was established in the former Recollets Convent. This convent, a lovely 18th century building, has become an artists' residence and cultural centre. This park is the perfect spot for a nap on the grass, or taking the time to read on the lawn.
To the south of the hotel, Place de la Republique heralds the Grands Boulevards and the Theatre District. Just beyond, you enter the Marais, the historic heart of Paris.
Finally, to the west of the Hotel, you’ll find Gare de l’Est and Gare du Nord, which despite their proximity do not disturb the character of the Saint Martin Canal Village.
On Saint Martin Canal, boat tours let you discover the “Paris of Parisians” as you reach the Seine through the Bastille's incredible underground canal - an unforgettable trip! (http://www.canauxrama.com/saint-martin.htm )
Croissants decorate the very lovely “Du Pain et des Idées” bakery on rue Yves Toudic.
The terraces of the “Sporting” and “Atmosphere” restaurants overlook Saint Martin Canal.
The mythical setting of “L’Hotel du Nord”, an eponymous location for shooting films, has recently become a sought-after bar/restaurant
Or visit “Artazart”, one of the leading art and design bookstores in Paris.
Rediscover the abounding life on our street and in our district on the blog dedicated to rue des Vinaigriers (http://ruedesvinaigriers.over-blog.com/).
Enjoy your stay off the beaten path!
